Timelapse of clouds floating over windmill

Earlier in the year I was back in the Netherlands for work and in the process (I visited my family over the weekend) came by the area where I grew up. It's an extraordinary area with reclaimed "polders" that were once milled dry using windpower. Here is a virtually unknown one that is close to where I was born. It sits in the middle of a large agricultural area in between historical villages somewhere midway between Utrecht and Rotterdam. I created a simple little timelapse of clouds floating over the mill using Lightroom's slideshow and assembled them using iMovie together with a few stills. I am not a videographer clearly, but this is still fun. It's in 720p HD in the vimeo link and it should work fine on iPads, iPhones, and Android devices.

Lake sunrise accidental timelapse

Blue lake sunrise in time
left top: ISO 100, 18-55mm at 18mm, f/11, 10s, right top: 1/6s
left middle: f/13, 1/30s, right middle: 1/4s
left bottom: 1/13s, right bottom: f/11, 1/80s

Accidental timelapse of Blue lake during one sunrise. the Color changes from purple to bright yellow. A cloud on the horizon came by in the middle of the sequence lowering the shutter speed for two shots contrary to what you would expect. Didn't hurt the color though. There is a bigger version on flickr too.

I also created a funny timelapse of all my shots that morning in that direction. Since I moved around quite a bit, I had to align all the shots using hugin (an open source panorama creation tool) and to heavily crop to avoid the image jumping around too much. The video is available in HD on vimeo.

Panning script for creating timelapses

You might remember a while ago I posted a few timelapses. One of a sunset and one of me staining the deck. Jeffrey friedl went a step further and wrote a very nice little perl script that you can use to create panning timelapses. Check it out here. Sean McCormack used it to create a nice panning timelapse of a beach that I embed below for your enjoyment:

This is an awesome tool and I'll be using it on some future timelapses.

TImelapse of me staining our deck

I did another timelapse of me painting the deck (see the older one of a sunset in our neighborhood park here). Unfortunately, I forgot to turn off the autofocus, causing the slight zooming effect you see. This is due to the focal length slightly changing when the focus distance changes. Esther thought this movie was just hilarious.

Check out a slightly higher resolution version here.

Faster framerate

The stop motion effect in the previous version of the movie was caused by me using a slow framerate (15 fps). I sped it up to 30 fps and the motion is far nicer. Here is the low-res flickr version:

And here is the high def version (click the image):

Here is the same timelapse that you can see in glorious HD on my smugmug page but in a little flash movie generated by flickr. Much lower quality indeed, but I can at least embed it! It's stuttery the first time around so just hit play again to see it smooth.

Timelapse movie

I created a little timelapse using the interval feature on the D300 of the sunset in the park around the corner from where we live. The sunset was not very spectacular but it works. I think I'll do this more often. Check it out in full H264 High-Def glory by clicking on the link below:

I'll write down sometime how this can be done.
