Clear Creek Canyon

Clear Creek Canyon sunset
Nikon D300, Tokina 11-16 mm f/2.8 at 11 mm, f/11, 1/30 s. Handheld and using a grad ND filter. Buy a print.

This image was taken halfway up one of my favorite mountain biking trails - Chimney Gulch - right after windy saddle. I haven't been able to ride my bike for a while now because of the significant possibility I'd wreck the trails. On this evening I strapped on my snow shoes which is always really funny to do so close to the urban area. One of my reasons for this outing was to test out my new Gitzo tripod (awesome btw) but I shot this image handheld as an afterthought.

  2. Nothing slips by you. The lack of contrast is caused by a slight fog hanging down in the canyon. Probably owing to the creek (clear creek) that runs next to the road (or more accurately the road runs next to the creek but the road is more visible in this image) that you see snaking in the distance. I've sometimes wondered how this view would look with denser fog but that happens really rarely here as it is usually so dry.

  3. Hi

err ... I wasn't trying to be picky ... but thought it may have been an effect created by grad filter + Photoshop. Interesting that it was a local effect.

Reminds me of a time when I had an annoying bit of dust stuck to one of my negs ... when I printed it I found it was an odd angled stick pushing up out of the bush (and not a fleck of stuff on my neg).

good thing I didn't get frantic in washing it off.. ;-)

  4. Yeah a real atmospheric effect for once. There is fairly little processing going on in this image. I strengthened the manual grad ND slightly (1 stop) over the horizon since I only used a two sop one in the field and it needed more than that. I further rolled back highlights, increased whites, and lowered blacks lightly in LR 4 beta. Finally it has a small amount of clarity, vibrance and saturation added - all below 10.
