Spring flowers

It is finally spring in Colorado and flowers are coming out in the foothills. Here are some pictures of Pasque flowers (Bigger in the flickr link). These pictures were taken in Lair of the Bear park and on a hike to the top of Bergen Peak which is near Evergreen in the Elk Meadow park.

Oil on the Louisiana shores

A gut-wrenching picture gallery on the oil from the Deepwater Horizon disaster reaching the Louisiana coast is available on the Big Picture. Don't watch it if you don't have a strong stomach. Meanwhile the people supposed to keep an eye on the drillers are partying with cakes inscribed "Drill, Baby, Drill" (I doubt the actual cake was as well punctuated as the NYT makes it seem). Sad, sad, sad.

What browser do you use?

A few days ago I started tracking site visits using the fantastic and free google analytics. Checking it out this morning, I noticed something extraordinary in the browser statistics. First, let me show you the stats over the last week (click for bigger)

Internet Explorer is in 4th place here! The top two browsers are color managed (Chrome on Windows is not color managed by default contrary to the mac version). Of course this is just one site with a built-in bias towards more geeky folks so it doesn't mean much for the wider web, but still this is extraordinary and a great sign of progress.

Lastly, I am surprised at the number of mobile visitors. I had 8 iPhones, 3 iPads, and one Android device visit the page. Strangely my Blackberry doesn't show up even though I know I looked at the site with it. This probably has to do with everything going through a proxy.

Picacho Peak

I recently spent some time in Southern Arizona with my family. We hiked in Picacho Peak State park, which is on the highway between Tucson and Phoenix. Early spring (late March and early April) this park explodes with wildflowers. You can also go up to the top of the peak but you have to do some scrambling with cables stuck in the rocks and such. Lots of fun. I took a few pictures there that I'd like to share. The time of day wasn't entirely right for good light, but I still like them. Much larger versions are available in the links underneath the images.

San Francisco streets

I was in San Francisco a few weeks ago because I organized a session at the MRS conference. I barely got time between sessions and social events to take a few images in the neighborhood of the Moscone. San Francisco is a fantastic vibrant city where I really should spend more time. I earlier posted the cliché image from the BART station at the SFO airport taken using my cellphone. Here are a few pictures that I put on my flickr stream for you all to enjoy.

This is one of our grad students checking the news:
What's the news today?

I call this Yellow, Green, and Girl. I like how she is lit up by the reflection from windows on the building behind me.

This guy had a great suit (and a great voice). He was singing gospels.

A cliché but I couldn't resist.
